Welcome to Calix Books and Antiques.
We have been buying and selling rare books, rare ephemera, incunabula and rare illuminated manuscripts on line since the early 1990’s and we source our fine rare books, ephemera and manuscripts from all over the world. Many of the items in our catalogs are unique and one of a kind, particularly the early signed Americana items as well as our manuscripts, books of hours and some of our incunabula. We span the history of books in religion, science, mathematics, philosophy, art, photography, natural sciences and history. We sell all of our fine rare books and ephemera online.
Check our New Additions section for the latest acquisitions. Also, please be sure to check our specials area as well as we often will close out a group of books from a period of history or science or whatever to make room for a new collection. We tend to keep our inventory low and not create a plethora of listings but rather focus on hard to find or rare items across all fields of publication and writing.
Grading and Provenance
The two most important aspects of buying and selling books are the proper grading of a rare book, ephemera or antique and the second is the provenance. Many of our rare books have been properly vetted and are sourced from reliable auction houses, dealers or private collections. We grade these books very carefully and supply a complete collation or the counting of pages with full descriptions of all the flaws, marks and anomalies we find within and on the exterior of the book that we believe are important and add to the character of the book. This collation is a books’ pedigree and no two pedigrees are exactly alike. Book plates from previous owners are retained and any previous auction records and locations of similar copies are also included as well as reference sources, when possible. This pedigree helps the buyer and the collector update insurance requests or seek comparable pricing across the market. The grading and provenance become an important and integral part of the life of a book and its current and future value.
