Miniscule Bible-1250

13th Century Bible

This miniscule hand written old and new testament bible was made somewhere in the mid-1200’s and is a one-of -a-kind where no similar copies have been found. It is believed to be written in France and has amazingly survived several canonizations of the bible and has chapters currently not found in the King James or any other versions of the bible. The miniscule writing was a technique used by the church to prevent or at least reduce the counterfeit production of bibles by unauthorized persons.

The Bibles were produced in what we would today think of great numbers but in reality, not many intact, complete bibles remain in the public market. Many of these bibles were torn up, used for binding later books and the offending sections removed during various cannonizations of the bible by the various churches. Survival of these bibles depended upon what part of the world the bible was found and who owned it and what religious group or king was in power. Owning a Catholic Bible, sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope was hazardous to your health in King Henry the Eighth’s England as was being a Puritan during the Restoration of the English Monarchy with Charles II.

There is no doubt that this particular bible with its many addtions of text is a unique bible. Although during the period of 1230 to about 1280 many bible texts were written, this particular text has survived multiple revisions and has sections that are currently not found in the modern bible.
