Paper printers boards with some chips and tears and edge bumps and corner wear but otherwise holding. Some separation at the spine but easily repaired. Publisher has some note as he published Kirscher’s works. Internally clean and bright. Esprit’s works are difficult to find and he is often overshadowed by Decartes and others.

Jacques Esprit:Esprit (1611-78), French man of letters whose gifts of conversation admitted him to society, notably to the salons of Mme de Rambouillet and Mme de Sablé. La Rochefoucauld’s intention was to publish a volume of maxims or reflections in collaboration with Mms de Sablé and Jacques Esprit but when they were published in 1664 they were the work of La Rochefoucauld alone. His current work ‘The Falseness of Human Virtue’ Parts one and two were published after his death and remains one of the few works published by the author in his own hand, albeit after his death. During this period he gained a resurgence of interest on his views of morality, virtue and humanity by the great philosophers of this time period.

A nice simple binding that is holding, clean throughout with an engraving showing the philosopher of ‘truth’ being assailed by the ‘king’ with the sword, surrounded by death and confusion and his advisors, obviously pleading with him to change his mind or tip the scales of truth.
